Driver’s Ready Spiced Pickling Vinegar takes away the hassle of preparing and seasoning your own vinegar – simply prepare your onions, pack them into sterilised jars and cover with the vinegar.
How many onions will 1050ml of vinegar pickle?
As a practical guide, 1050ml of pickling vinegar should comfortably cover around 1.5–2kg of tightly packed pickling onions, depending on the size of the onions and the shape of your jars.
So, for the full 4kg net, we would recommend 2–3 × 1050ml jars of vinegar. Three jars is the safer recommendation if you want to guarantee the onions are completely submerged.
🧅 Traditional Pickled Onion Recipe
For approximately 2kg of pickling onions:
- Peel the onions, trimming the root and top carefully without cutting too deeply into them.
- Place the onions in a large non-metallic bowl and sprinkle generously with salt. Leave overnight (12–24 hours). This helps draw out moisture and keeps the finished onions crisp.
- The following day, rinse the onions thoroughly in cold water to remove the salt and drain well.
- Pack the onions tightly into clean, sterilised jars.
- Pour over the Driver’s Ready Spiced Pickling Vinegar, making sure every onion is completely covered.
- Seal the jars and store in a cool, dark place.
- Leave for at least 4 weeks before eating. For a stronger, more developed traditional flavour, leave them for 6–8 weeks.
Tip: Because the vinegar is already spiced, there's no need to add additional spices unless you want to personalise the flavour with something like chilli, peppercorns or a bay leaf.
